Eighth Inning Surge Powers Mavericks Past Red Wolves

JONESBORO, Ark. – After giving up a four-run lead, Anthony Dominguez hit a two-run go-ahead home run as part of a three-run eighth inning to power the UT Arlington baseball team (15-18, 6-4 Sun Belt) past Arkansas State (9-18, 4-6 Sun Belt) on Friday Night at Tomlinson Stadium-Kell Field.

The Mavericks used four pitchers to secure the win.  Carlos Tavera (ND) tossed 5.2 shutout innings in the start, striking out nine batters along the way.  Zach Norris allowed five runs off five hits in one inning pitched.  Tanner King (W, 2-0) threw 1.1 scoreless innings, picking up his second win of the year before Michael Wong (S, 5) finished the game with 1.0 shutout inning to pick up the save.

UTA finished with nine hits in the game with Dominguez and Phillip Childs each finishing with two hits.  JD Wadleigh, Connor Aube, Dylan Paul, Josh Minjarez and Cason Gregory each contributed one hit.  Paul led the Mavericks with three RBI, increasing his season total to a team-high 26.  Dominguez also finished with a multi-RBI game, knocking in two runs with a two-run home run.

The Mavericks loaded the bases in the top of the third with a single, walk and error.  Aube was hit by a pitch to bring in the first run before Dylan Paul drove a ball to the right field corner to clear the bases and give the Mavericks a 4-0 lead.

The Red Wolves would threaten in the sixth inning, loading the bases with just one out.  Tavera would force a strikeout before Norris came in and forced a pop out to escape the inning.

A-State came back in the seventh inning with a two-out rally to take their first lead of the game. Two singles and a wild pitch put runners on the corners before another wild pitch scored the first run for the Red Wolves.  A hit batter, followed by a single loaded the bases for a second straight inning. A-State would score another run due to a second wild pitch to cut the Maverick lead in half. A single to second base scored another run before a single to right field pushed two more runs home to give the Red Wolves a 5-4 lead.

The A-State lead was short-lived as the Mavericks jumped back on top in the top of the 8th.  Following a leadoff walk, Anthony Dominguez connected on his first home run of the season to put the Mavericks back on top, 6-5. Childs and Minjarez singled to put runners on the corners. Cason Gregory took advantage of the Minjarez at third base and laid down a sacrifice squeeze to put the Mavs up two runs.

The Red Wolves put runners on first and second with their first two batters, but Wong forced a double play to get two much needed outs.  With a runner at third and two outs, Wong forced a final ground out to end the game a secure the Maverick victory.
