Mavs Split Doubleheader Against Louisiana on Senior Day

ARLINGTON, Texas – Senior day was celebrated at Clay Gould Ballpark on Saturday afternoon as the UT Arlington baseball team (24-27, 12-9 Sun Belt) split a doubleheader against Louisiana (28-21, 11-10 Sun Belt). The Mavericks took game one 6-2 before falling to the Ragin' Cajuns 7-4 in game two.

GAME ONE RECAP | UTA wins 6-2
Kody Bullard (W, 7-3) started on the bump for the Mavericks in game one, tossing 7.0 innings.  Bullard struck out six batters while allowing just one run off five hits.  Zach Norris threw 0.2 innings and gave up one hit.  Tanner King (S, 3) tossed the final 1.1 innings, allowing one run off one hit while striking out three batters.

The Mavericks finished with seven hits in the game, led by Cason Gregory's 2-for-3 day at the plate. Phillips Childs, Dylan Paul, Andrew Miller, Anthony Dominguez and Josh Minjarez each finished with one hit.  Minjarez led the Mavericks with two RBI in the game.

UTA went right to work in the first inning, plating four runs to take an early 4-0 lead. An error and hit by pitch put runners on first and second before Dylan Paul connected on a double to left field to score the first run. A ground ball to shortstop by Andrew Miller scored the second before Minjarez drove in his two runs with the second double of the inning.

The Mavericks added one more in the fourth inning.  With a runner on second base, Childs singled to right field for the fifth run of the game.

The Cajuns got one back in the seventh.  With a runner on first, Louisiana used a double down the left field line to score their first run of the game.

The first two batters reached base for the Mavericks in the 8th inning before Cason Gregory hit a single up the middle to score the sixth run of the day for the Mavericks.

The Cajuns hit a two-out 9th inning solo home run for their second run of the game, but it was too late for a rally as the Mavs held on for the win.

GAME TWO RECAP | Louisiana wins 7-4
David Moffat (ND) started on the mound for the Mavericks in the second game of the twin bill, tossing 5.0 innings, while fanning three batters.  Logan Austin (L, 1-2) took the loss, giving up two runs off two hits in two innings. Cade Winquest tossed the final two innings, allowing one earned run off three hits, while striking out three.  The Mavericks pitching staff did not walk a single Cajun in the game.

UTA ended the day with eight hits, led by Connor Aube's 3-for-5 day at the plate. Cason Gregory joined Aube with a multi-hit game of his own (2-4).  Phillip Childs knocked in two runs for the UTA, while Aube and Dominguez each had one RBI from solo home runs.

The Mavericks once again jumped out on top, this time with a two-run second inning.  With the bases loaded, Phillip Childs hit a single to left field to push two runs home.

In the next frame the Cajuns tied the game with a two-RBI single up the heart of the Maverick defense, but UTA quickly responded with two runs of their own off solo jacks from Connor Aube and Anthony Dominguez.

Louisiana cut into the Maverick lead in the fourth inning, using another single up the middle t score a runner from second base.

The score remained at 4-3 until the 8th inning when the Cajuns caught fire.  Back-to-back hit batters put the Cajuns in position for the go-ahead run.  Two singles scored two runs to give Louisiana the late lead.

Louisiana added two insurance runs in the 9th inning, started by a leadoff double and wild pitch.  Another single up the middle pushed the sixth run home for the Cajuns.  A failed pickoff attempt at first resulted in an error and allowed the baserunner to advance to third before being brought home with a sacrifice bunt.
