STATESBORO, Ga – An 8
th inning pinch hit from
Sam Crowell was the difference in the UT Arlington's 5-3 win over Georgia Southern as the freshman hit a two-run single to score the final two runs of the game. With the win, the Mavericks move to 13-9 in Sun Belt play as they extend their lead atop the Sun Belt West in the final weekend of play.
Carlos Tavera (ND) started on the bump for the Mavericks, tossing 6.0 innings in the win. Tavera gave up three runs off two home runs, while striking out seven batters. Tavera ends the regular season with 108 strikeouts and will need just six at the SBC tournament to break the single-season record.
Zach Norris (W, 4-3) threw one inning, striking out three of the four batters he faced.
Michael Wong and
Tanner King (S, 4) tossed the final two shutout innings to secure the win for the Mavericks. THe Mavericks pitching staff struck out 13 Eagles on the night.
UTA finished with 10 hits on the day with three Mavericks finishing with multi-hit days.
Dylan Paul,
Andrew Miller and
Josh Minjarez each came away with two hits.
Sam Crowell led the squad with two RBI, while Paul, Miller and
Anthony Dominguez each ended with one. Paul connected on his 8
th home run of the season.
The Maverick bats started hot, finishing with four hits in the first inning.
Phillip Childs and
Connor Aube connected on singles to put runners on the corners.
Andrew Miller and
Anthony Dominguez brought home Childs and Aube with back-to-back singles to score two runs.
After a quiet two innings, the Eagles tied the game in the third with a two-out, two-run home run to left field.
An inning late, the Eagles took the lead, sending the first pitch of the fourth inning over the left field wall for a solo home run.
The Georgia Southern lead wouldn't last, though, as
Dylan Paul took a 2-2 count to center field to tie the game back at three in the top of the fifth.
The Mavericks loaded the bases in the 8
th inning using a single, error and intentional walk. With two outs,
Sam Crowell pinch hit and worked a full count before taking the seventh pitch up the middle of the infield to score two runs and give the Mavericks a 5-3 lead.

The Mavericks will look to clinch the Sun Belt West tomorrow at 5:30 pm CT for their second game against Georgia Southern.
