BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Junior
Joel Bengtsson set a new school record on Saturday afternoon as he ran a 7.87 in the 60 hurdles to lead the UT Arlington track and field team.
"We had a great day in two different locations," said Head Coach
John Sauerhage. "Joel put together an impressive performance and many others competed well against great competition. We just need to stay healthy and keep training to make progress in our meets."
Bengtsson won the event at the Texas Aggie Invitational and matched a nearly 20-year-old record set by Paul Whitty in 2003. He was not done there as he went on to set a personal record in the 200 later that afternoon with a time of 21.81.
Junior
Marquentin Barnes continued his stellar season as he shattered his personal record in the 3000 by nearly 10 seconds, finishing fourth with a time of 8:29.03.
On the women's side, freshman
Iyana Gray followed her stellar start in the 60 with a second-place finish this week, finishing with a time of 7.51. Senior
Tatyana Terrell continued her great start with a 55.77 finish in the 400. She also competed in the 200 and finished sixth with a time of 24.69,
Freshman
Anne Arntsen led the distance side as she placed fourth in the mile with a time of 4:55.38.
On the field side, many performers went up to Norman to compete in the JD Martin Invitational, but many stood out on the track side.
Senior
Lucas Van Klaveren led the way as he finished first in the 600 with a time of 1:19.12. He followed that up with a personal record in the 60 hurdles at 8.30, finishing fourth.
Freshman
Obi Ugwu had a great showing in the triple jump as he finished fourth at 14.48m, a new personal record.
Senior
Jade Bontke had a tremendous result as well in Norman as she set a personal record with a second-place finish in the 600 at 1:29.84. She also finished fifth in the 60 hurdles at 8.90 and fifth in the high jump at 1.63m.
OTHER NOTABLE PERFORMANCES AT THE TEXAS AGGIE INVITATIONAL
- Junior Jarvis Miles placed sixth in the 400 at 49.04,
- Senior Zion Smith placed sixth in the 800 with a time of 1:57.01
- Sophomore Nolan Walker and senior Medric Roberson placed fourth and fifith in the 60 hurdles, respectively.
- Senior Shelby West placed fourth in the 400 at 56.61. She also placed sixth in the 60 hurdles.
- Senior Charlotte Murphy finished third in the 3000 with a time of 10:15.17.
OTHER NOTABLE PERFORMANCES AT THE JD MARTIN INVITATIONAL
- All-American Bryson DeBerry finished third in the high jump at 2.05
- Freshmen Ethan Tennison and Trenton Whitworth placed fourth and sixth in the pole vault at 4.45m and 4.30m, respectively.
- Junior Marvin Walford placed fourth in the long jump finals at 6.55m and sixth in the triple jump at 14.26m.
- Freshman Simona Cabella and senior Abigail Kelly-Salo placed fifth and sixth in the pole vault at 1.63m and 1.58m, respectively.
- Senior Amelia Peterson finished fourth in the long jump at 5.37m and sixth in the triple jump at 11.85m.
UTA returns to action next weekend as they travel to the Texas Tech Open and Multis in Lubbock beginning on Friday.
