WACO, Texas – After a busy and demanding start to the season, the UT Arlington men's golf team finally had a couple of weeks to rest up in advance of Baylor's 36-hole Bear Brawl at Ridgewood Country Club on Halloween which will conclude the Mavericks' fall schedule.
Â
UTA LINEUP
1) Hiroki Miya
2) Daniel Cronje
3) Caleb Hicks
4) Zak Jones
5) Cameron Beck
Â
Four of UTA's five members will have competed in all five fall tournaments, with freshman Beck set to make his collegiate debut. Monday's 36-hole event will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
Â
UTA will be paired with fellow Western Athletic Conference members UT Rio Grande Valley and Stephen F. Austin, beginning between holes 7-11. Live scoring will be available via Golfstat.
Â
TOURNAMENT HISTORY
This will be UT Arlington's first appearance in the Bear Brawl. Additionally, it is the first time since 2016 the Mavs have played in a tournament hosted by Baylor, and only the second time BU has hosted a tournament in Waco since 2005. This is just the second-annual Bear Brawl, as the first was contested just seven months ago in March.
Â
PARTICIPATING TEAMS
Baylor (Host), Baylor 'B' Team, New Orleans, Oral Roberts, Stephen F. Austin, Tarleton, Texas A&M-Commerce, UT Arlington, UTRGV
Â
ABOUT THE COURSE
Scenic Ridgewood Country Club was built over the rolling hills and wooded areas of central Texas. It will test the precision of players as the course plays at just under 6,700 yards – by far the shortest course of the fall campaign for the Mavs – but it features plenty of significant elevation changes.
Â
LINEUP INFORMATION
Miya – The New Zealand native has led the way for the Mavs this year. In 12 rounds, he paces the team in average score (72.33), par-or-better rounds (six), rounds in the 60s (two) and also has the lowest round of all golfers this year with a 68 in the 1st round of the Little Rock Invitational.
Â
Cronje – The product of Paarl, South Africa, has improved his finish in every tournament so far this fall. With finishes of T-84, T-54 and T-24, he posted a season-best T-17 (218: 71-74-73) at the Little Rock Invitational two week ago. The senior – who carries a scoring average of exactly 74 over 12 rounds – will look to climb up the leaderboard once again in Waco.
Â
Hicks – The Arlington native started the year on fire, posting four out of six rounds at even or better. He currently has the second-best scoring average on the team at 73.92 through the dozen rounds. After uncharacteristic showings from the fifth year in his past two tournaments (+18 at the Tempest Collegiate and +9 at the Little Rock Invitational), Hicks will look to get back to his low rounds at Ridgewood CC.
Â
Jones – Coming off his worse performance of the year, he will look to improve after struggling in Little Rock, where he signed for +19. Before that, Jones had his career-best finish at the Tempest Collegiate, posting a T-7 (215: 71-71-73). The Spring, Texas, product has a 75.25 scoring average in four events this year.
Â
Beck – Making his collegiate debut, Beck will look to impress as the long-ball driver will be tested at the tight Ridgewood CC. A product of nearby Mansfield High School, Beck led the Tigers to a 4th-place showing at the 2022 state tournament.
Â
NEXT UP
This will be the Mavs final tournament of the fall season. The next time UTA will suit up is Feb. 20-21 for the Bayou City Collegiate Classic at Westwood Golf Club in Houston. Â
