Mavs knock off Southern Utah in five behind late 7-0 run on Senior Day

ARLINGTON, Texas --- Mollie Blank registered her third consecutive double-double to help lead the UT Arlington volleyball team (17-9, 9-5 WAC) to a 16-25, 25-23, 25-14, 19-25, 15-8 win over Southern Utah (7-16, 6-8 WAC) in the regular season finale inside the College Park Center on Saturday.

Prior to the match, the program honored its six seniors - Nya Blair, Meredith Fisher, Devon Martinka, Jessica Stancliff, Brooke Townsend and Alli Wells. Between the second and third sets, the 2002 volleyball team was recognized for the 20-year anniversary of their NCAA Tournament appearance that included Southland Conference regular season and tournament championships. The match was also the first part of a tripleheader for Homecoming weekend.

"We played a lot of volleyball this week," UT Arlington head coach J.T. Wenger said of his team, which also had a five-set match on Thursday. "We had a lot going on. It was a lot of fun. There was a lot of (potential) distractions, but we kept our focus when we needed to. It was exciting to come out on top of it for sure. It was an interesting match, a lot of back and forth, but we found the way to put it away."

Briana Brown led the offense with 13 kills while hitting .500. Townsend and Martinka chipped in nine apiece, and Kortney Puckett tallied nine with a .538 percentage while leading the team in aces (3). Fisher was next up with six kills, and she had a match-best eight blocks.

With the fifth set tied at seven, the Mavs used a 7-0 run to put the match away as the team got kills from Brown, Simara Peyton and Nya Blair during the stretch. After a service error ended the run, Brown added her 13th kill to clinch the match.

Blank led the team in assists (21) along with 12 digs and six kills for her third straight double-double, including her fifth over the past eight and sixth this year. Sophie Skinner added 18 assists along with four digs, and Alyssa Duran finished third in assists with five while adding nine digs.

Townsend fell one kill shy of a double-double as she registered a team-best 14 digs. Alli Wells added 11 more along with three assists.

NOTES
The Mavs are now 6-2 in five-set matches this year.

Townsend's nine kills give her 1,296 in her career, putting her just four away from 1,300 and 34 shy of surpassing Chris Rudiger for ninth place in program history.

With her 11 digs, Wells now has 1,620 in her career, which puts her four shy of surpassing Judith McGill for seventh place in program history.

WAC TOURNEY AHEAD
With the win, UT Arlington has concluded the regular season and will open WAC tournament play as the No. 5 seed against No. 4 Utah Valley in a quarterfinal at 4 p.m. on Thursday in Edinburg, Texas on the campus of UTRGV. The winner would advance to Friday's semifinal against the winner of No. 1 UTRGV and No. 8 Southern Utah. The championship match is at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
