ARLINGTON – Coming off an incredible start to the season, the UT Arlington track and field team looks to put together a strong final tune up before the Sun Belt Indoor Championships on Friday and Saturday afternoons at the Charlie Thomas Invitational on the campus of Texas A&M.
"We look to continue to build off some outstanding performances," said Head Coach John Sauerhage. "I am pleased with what we've done so far and look forward to competition at A&M again before our conference meet."
Two Mavs were named SBC Athletes of the Week after an outstanding performance in junior Joel Bengtsson and senior Jade Bontke.
Bengtsson broke the 60m hurdles school record three times last week in Lubbock. In the final, Bengtsson broke his own mark for the third time, winning the event with a time of 7.78. Bengtsson's time is currently 15th in the country.
Meanwhile, Bontke got the entire meet started with a bang as she became the first Maverick Pentathlon competitor in school history to break 4,000 points. Bontke shattered Alexus Henry's 2018 mark of 3,895 with a total of 4,043 to finish third overall in the event. Bontke's pentathlon score is currently 12th in the nation, while her high jump mark of 1.74 was 53rd in the nation.
Along with Bengtsson and Bontke, three other Mavericks sit in the Top 75 in their respective events as they prepare to compete this weekend.
All-American Bryson DeBerry comes off a season-high 2.19m jump at Texas Tech and will look to break 2.20 this weekend. DeBerry's mark is currently sixth in the country.
Lucas Van Klaveren is 25th in the nation in the heptathlon after putting together an impressive point total of 5,443.
Additionally, freshman Iyana Gray looks to continue her stellar rookie season as she is 63rd in the nation in the 60 after a 7.43 in Lubbock. She sits 71st in the 200 with a time of 24.08.
