Mavericks Open Outdoor Season with Strong Showing at UNT

DENTON, Texas – The UT Arlington track and field team opened its outdoor season on Saturday afternoon in Denton at the UNT Dual Meet at the Soccer and Track & Field Stadium.

UTA got a ton of big performances all day long as the women secured a 91-55 win in the team scores, while the men fell 96-71 despite some tremendous performances.

The Mavs were also without three big time performers as Bryson DeBerry, Jade Bontke, and Lucas Van Klaveren were all competing at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Birmingham.

However, another All-American made his sophomore debut and started it with a bang as Arthur Petersen, on his final throw of the day in the javelin, hit an incredible mark at 73.36m which would be the top throw in the country as it stands now.

It was Petersen's second throw over 70 meters as he hit 70.41 on his third attempt.

Sophomore Liv Cantby also started her season well with a win in the javelin on the women's side, hitting a mark of 49.89.

Abigail Flores had a big day in field with victories in the hammer throw at 46.37 and the discus at 42.60. Calyha Brown won the shot put at 14.19 and was right behind Flores in the discus at 42.26.

Simona Cabella and Abigail Kelly-Salo went 1-2 in the pole vault as both hit the mark of 3.75, while McKinley Novacek won the high jump at 1.58.

Marvin Walford swept his jumping events, winning the long jump at 6.68 and following that with a win in the triple jump at 14.07. Obi Ugwu placed second in both events. Randon Gray won the pole vault with a mark of 4.70.

On the running side, Tatyana Terrell won the 200 meter dash with a time of 24.34, a new outdoor PR. She also was victorious in the 400 meter dash at 55.69. Adeyemi Talabi won the 100 meter dash at 12.00.

Mathilde Ruud and Madeleine Rowe went 1-2 in the 1500 as Rudd finished at 4:46.34, while Rowe was just behind her at 4:46.36. Ruud went on to dominate the 800 with a time of 2:23.34 while Rowe cruised to a win in the 3000 at 10:48.40.

Shelby West won the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.42.

The 4x100 team of Teressia Grant-Corsey, Iyana Gray, Madison Pippins, and Mikeya Washington cruised to victory with a time of 45.84.

Medric Roberson won the 110 meter hurdles at 14.70, while Robert Griffin set a new PR in the 200 at 21.28. Alfredo Corona and Jackson Cichon each set a new PR in the 1500.

UTA will return to action next Saturday as they head to Fort Worth to compete in the TCU Invitational at Lowdon Track & Field Complex.
