FORT WORTH – A handful of first place finishes along with personal marks fell on Saturday afternoon as the UT Arlington track and field team put together a terrific day at the TCU Invitational at the Lowdon Track and Field Complex.
"Some really impressive performances from our freshmen throughout the day," said Head Coach
John Sauerhage. "All event areas had good performances."
One of those freshman performers was
Iyana Gray, who put together an outstanding day on the sprint side, finishing first overall in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.60. Gray finished second overall in the 100 meter dash with a new PR of 11.43.
On the men's side, a pair of freshmen came through in big ways as
Jackson Cichon took home a win in the 800 meter dash at 1:53.18, while
Alfredo Corona won the 1500 with a time of 3:52.87. Corona was also second in the 3000 at 8:48.97.
The men had some great performances as
Joel Bengtsson opened his outdoor season with a win in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 13.76. All-American
Lucas Van Klaveren won the javelin with a throw of 55.94.
All-American
Bryson DeBerry had a terrific showing the long jump with a second place finish of 7.41m, a new PR for the senior.
Tatyana Terrell added on to her excellent start to the outdoor season with a second place finish in the 400 meter dash with at 54.45 and added a fifth place finish in the 200 at 23.81.
"We showed good potential today and look forward to the Texas Relays next week," added Sauerhage.
OTHER NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
- Vanessa Ugorji placed fourth in the 400 meter dash at 54.70.
- Shelby West placed third in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 59.87.
- Madeleine Rowe finished in fourth in the 800 at 2:16.00.
- The 4x100 team of Mikeya Washington, Gray, Terrell, and Adeyemi Talabi placed third with a time of 45.32.
- Abigail Kelly-Salo finished third in the pole vault, clearing 3.80.
- Amelia Petersen earned a fifth place finish in the triple jump at 12.02.
- Jacob Ye added a fifth place finish in the 1500 at 3:56.23 and fourth in the 3000 at 8:59.28.
- Nolan Walker was fifth in the 110 hurdles at 14.61 and third in the 400 meter hurdles at 59.75.
- Randon Gray and Brady Shadrick went third and fourth in the pole vault at 4.75 and 4.55, respectively.
- Marvin Walford and Obi Ugwu went fourth and fifth in the triple jump at 14.58 and 14.16, respectively.
- The men's 4x100 team placed fourth at 40.93, while the 4x400 team was third at 3:22.21.
UTA returns to action on Wednesday as they head to Austin for the historic Texas Relays at Mike A. Meyers Stadium at the University of Texas.
