Box Score ARLINGTON, Texas – UTA baseball (8-15, 2-4) lost 7-3 at Clay Gould Ballpark on Sunday to the Trojans of Troy University (16-7, 4-2) in the final game of the three-game series. Despite the loss, the Mavericks still took the series after winning the first two games on Friday and Saturday.
Cade Winquest (ND, 0-1) started on the bump for the Mavericks where he registered 5.1 innings, giving up one run on three hits with three strikeouts.
Gray Bailey (L, 3-2),
Jack Hagan (1.0 IP),
Matt Novis (1.1 IP) and
Sam Collins (1.0 IP) came on in relief to finish the game.
The UT Arlington offense continued the strong weekend performance in the bottom of the first with singles from
Tyler Rice (1-3, R) and
Wilson Galvan (2-5, HR) followed by a hit by pitch to load the bases.
Oscar Ponce was able to knock in the first run of the game with a fielder's choice giving his side an early 1-0 advantage.
Despite running into a spot of trouble in the top of the third, Winquest retained the shutout while tallying two strikeouts in the inning.
In the bottom half of the third, Galvan sent a 3-1 pitch sailing over the left field wall for a leadoff home run, his second of the season, giving the Mavs a 2-0 lead.
Troy answered with a pair of three-run home runs in the sixth and seventh innings and a sacrifice fly to give the visitors a 7-2 lead.
Back-to-back doubles from
Matt Lumsden (1-4, 2B, R) and Matt Cavanagh (3-3, 2B, RBI) in the bottom of the eighth inning to cut the deficit to 7-3.
UTA threatened another comeback in the ninth with two runners reaching base with no outs but failed to capitalize on the run-scoring opportunity.
UP NEXT
The Mavericks will travel to Waco for a midweek matchup against Baylor on Tuesday, March 29 at 6:30 p.m. at Baylor Ballpark.
