Late Miscues Costly For Mavericks

ARLINGTON, Texas – The Mavericks of UTA (11-23, 4-9 SBC) fell in a pitcher's duel 6-1 verses #18 Texas State (26-9, 10-3 SBC) on Thursday night at Clay Gould Ballpark.

Starter Tanner King (L, 2-4) spun a career-high nine strikeouts in 8.0 innings on the mound for the Mavericks, allowing four earned runs on seven hits.  Trevor Pruitt (1.0 IP) pitched the ninth and tallied two strikeouts of his own.  The two pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts while not allowing a walk.

After King retired the side in order to open the game, the top of the UTA order was able to reach base safely including a single from Boone Montgomery to extend his season-best hitting streak to seven games.  Tanner Rice was able to score the first run of the game on a wild pitch to give the home team an early 1-0 advantage.

The Bobcats aggressively leveled the score in the top of the second, collecting two first-pitch singles, scratching across their first run on a groundout.

King was stellar in innings three through six, allowing only one hit and no runs during this stretch.  A mistake with one out in the seventh inning derailed an otherwise sterling outing with a pop fly getting lost while in flight over the outfield grass.  It fell in for what was scored as a 2-RBI triple which was followed by a run-scoring sacrifice bunt which gave Texas State a 4-1 lead.

The visiting side would add another run in the top of the eighth with a sacrifice fly.

UTA would chase the opposing starter with two outs in the bottom of the inning with a Cade Sumbler walk.  Tanner Rice drove a double off of the right field wall against the reliever to put runners on second and third but they would end the inning in those positions.

After a fourth error in the ninth, the Bobcats would add an unearned run to land at the final score of 6-1.
