Mavericks Drop Series Finale to Bobcats

ARLINGTON, Texas – The UTA Mavericks (11-25, 4-11 SBC) were defeated 17-6 in seven innings by the #18 Texas State Bobcats (28-9, 12-3 SBC) on Saturday at Clay Gould Ballpark in the final Sun Belt Conference meeting between the two sides.

Cade Winquest (L, 1-2) started the game on the bump and recorded two strikeouts, giving up four runs on two hits and five walks in one inning of work.  Matt Novis (2.0 IP), Gray Bailey (2.2 IP), Jack Hagan (0.2 IP) and Cade Citelli (0.2 IP) finished the game for UT Arlington, collecting five strikeouts with one walk.

Texas State batted around in the first for four runs on two hits including a two-run home run.  They would add two more runs in the second inning to give themselves an early 6-0 lead.

A leadoff double from Zach Henry in the bottom of the second followed by a Tyler Rice single put runners at the corners with no outs.  Henry would score on a double play to make it a 6-1 game.

The Bobcats scratched out another run in the third inning to widen their lead to 7-1.

Determined to keep the contest within reach, Henry led the Mavericks offense with a shift-beating single to center field with one away in the bottom of the fourth inning.  A subsequent walk and fielder's choice placed runners at first and third with two outs.  Cason Gregory would bring in the second run with a bloop RBI single into right field while advancing Cade Sumbler to third base.  Sumbler would come in to score on a wild pitch to make the score 7-3.

After Bailey retired the side in order in the top of the fifth, UTA turned up the heat with a pair of one-out walks from Nick Pierce and Wilson Galvan.  Henry brought both runners home with a three-run home run over the right field wall, to give the Mavs a manageable deficit at 7-6.

A seven-run sixth inning for Texas State negated the comeback and opened up a 14-6 advantage, which was followed by three runs in the seventh to end the game early as the run rule was enforced.
