LAFAYETTE, La. – The UT Arlington track and field team return to action on Thursday morning as they will compete in the Sun Belt Championships at the Ragin' Cajun Track Facility on the campus of Louisiana.
"We are ready and excited to perform," said 33-time Conference Coach of the Year John Sauerhage. "This group is ready to leave it all out there and we are expecting outstanding results from both teams."
The men look to capture their fourth outdoor title in the SBC and their first since 2019, while the women look to capture their first outdoor title in the SBC and their first since winning the Southland title in 2001. The men's and women's programs have combined to win 17 outdoor titles with the men's 11 conference titles being the most in any sport at UTA.
The Mavericks will look for plenty of big time performances throughout the two-day event as many athletes are scattered across the SBC Performance List.
UTA comes in with the top seed time in six different events and is in the top 3 of 20 different events.
The quartet of Arthur Petersen, Joel Bengtsson, Bryson DeBerry, and Lucas Van Klaveren are tops in the conference coming into the weekend and sit in the top 11 nationally in their respective events. Petersen is third in the nation in the javelin at 79.90, while Bengtsson in seventh is the nation in the 110 meter hurdles at 13.54. DeBerry comes in at ninth in the nation in the high jump at 2.21m, while Van Klaveren is 11th in the decathlon with 7,760 points.
The four have been a key reason to the Maverick men being ranked in the Top 30 nationally all season long as they currently sit in 28th.
Van Klaveren adds the second fastest time in the 400 hurdles at 51.57, while Marvin Walford checks in at second in the triple jump at 15.35. Brady Shadrick is third in the decathlon coming into the weekend at 6,483 points, while Jackson Cichon comes in with the third fastest time in the SBC in the 800 meter at 1:51.60
Jade Bontke, the top point scorer from the indoor season, comes into the week with the top seed in the long jump (6.25m) and pentathlon (5,506). She is also a part of the 4x400 meter relay team who sits second in the SBC with a school record time of 3:10.95 along with Tatyana Terrell, Vanessa Ugorji, and Shelby West.
Iyana Gray comes in with the second fastest time in both the 100 meter dash (11.31) and 200 meter dash (23.36), while Terrell has top four times in the 100 meter dash (fourth), 200 meter dash (third), and 400 meter dash (third). Gray and Terrell, along with Ugorji and Adeyemi Talabi have the second fastest time in the SBC in the 4x100 at 44.62.
West checks in at second for the 400 hurdles with a seed time of 59.06, while Liv Cantby comes in third in the javelin with a throw of 49.89.
Things get rolling on Thursday morning as the decathlon and heptathlon are set for 9 a.m. with field events and primarily distance taking center stage in the evening.
