FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – A total of 12 members of the UT Arlington men's and women's track and field team set their focus for the 2002 NCAA Outdoor West Region Preliminary for the next four days at John McDonnell Field at the University of Arkansas.
The top-48 individuals in each event based off season-best times during the outdoor campaign earned a spot in the regional. To advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 8-11, athletes must finish in the top 12. The East Preliminary (which takes place May 25-28 on the campus of Indiana in Bloomington) will also advance the top-12 finishers to comprise the 24-person field for the national championship events.
It is already known that Jade Bontke and Lucas Van Klaveren have punched their tickets to Eugene in the heptathlon (5,692) and decathlon (7,760) as a group of Mavs look to join them. Bontke will compete in four individual events (high jump, long jump, 400m hurdles, 4x400)Â in prelims, while Van Klaveren will compete in the 400m hurdles. Bontke sits 23rd in the nation in the high jump (1.82), while Van Klaveren is 28th in the country in the hurdles (50.48).
Both Arthur Petersen and Bryson DeBerry look to return to Eugene after making an appearance a season ago and earning All-American honors.
Sun Belt Conference Field Athlete of the Year Arthur Petersen leads the way for the Mavericks. Petersen stole the show for the Mavs at the Michael Johnson Invitational in April as he had a mammoth throw of 79.90, breaking his previous school record and moving up to third in the nation in the javelin.Â
He registered a mark of 75.09m (246'4") and took home his second consecutive Sun Belt title, earning first team accolades in the process. Six other competitors had personal-best marks and Petersen still took the crown by nearly eight meters (25'4"). Petersen won the 2022 crown with a throw that was nearly 13 feet longer than he had as a freshman. During the season, Peterson won a pair of Sun Belt Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week accolades.
DeBerry comes in at ninth in the country after he broke his own school record in the high jump, clearing the 2.21m (7-03) bar on his third, and final, attempt to also register a PR in the finals at the Texas Relays on March 26. Facing a group of elite competitors, DeBerry finished 4th in the event, but still surpassed his previous record of 2.19m (7-02 ¼) set at the NCAA West Preliminary Round last year. Â
In the prelims of the 110m hurdles at the Texas Relays on March 25, Bengtsson delivered what at that point was the nation's fastest time this year with a blistering 13.54, now sitting 15th in the nation. That mark is also incredibly the 3rd-best in the world this year in terms of those who are eligible/qualify at the time. The 13.54 time shattered his previous best and notched the 2nd-best mark in program history.Â
Rounding out the men's side is Walford, who is Top 100 in the nation in the triple jump at 15.37m. Walford hit this mark in his last showing at the SBC Championships, earning silver after landing the massive jump for a new PR.
Bontke will be one of hte headliners on the women's side, but six other women join her in their quest to make it to Eugene.
Iyana Gray has been a standout all season long in sprints. She set a pair of new school record in her sprinting events at the SBC Championships, going for 11.22 to finish second and set a new school record in the 100 meter dash and followed that up with a bronze in the 200 meter dash with a new school mark of 23.13.Â
Gray will compete in both the 100 and 200 as well as the 4x100. She is joined by Tatyana Terrell, who is set to compete in the 100, 200, 400, and both relays, Adeyemi Talabi, who will compete in the 100 and 4x100, and Vanessa Ugorji, who will compete in both relays.
No runner has been running better for the Mavericks as of late than Shelby West as she eyes the 400m hurdles. West set a new school record, meet record, and facility record in the 400-meter hurdles at the SBC Championships as she won the event with a time of 57.68. She has topped her PR four times this season and is currently 31st in the nation in the event.
Cantby returns to prelims as she sits with a season-best throw of 49.89. The 4x100 team comes in with a seed time of 44.62, while the 4x400 team checks in at 3:37.14.
The men lead things off on Wednesday afternoon, while the women will begin on Thursday.
