FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Senior
Bryson DeBerry and junior
Joel Bengtsson earned their way to Eugene and the NCAA Championships on Friday afternoon at John McDowell Field for the UT Arlington track and field team.
DeBerry will return to the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the second straight season after earning All-American honors a season ago in Eugene. DeBerry has now made four straight NCAA Championships in both the indoor and outdoor season and can potentially finish his career as a four-time All-American at UTA.
After a tough outing at the Sun Belt Championships, DeBerry bounced back and rolled to through the prelims, clearing his first four jumps at 2.00m, 2.05, 2.10m, and 2.15m, putting him well in position to advance.
DeBerry took one attempt at 2.18m, just missing the clear, but was in position to advance without needing to take another jump and passed on his next two attempts to earn the nod.
For Bengtsson, the junior from Sweden needed either a top three finish in his heat or one of the three best times after the heats to advance in the 110m hurdles. He made it easy as he took the win in heat two with a time of 13.65, punching his first ever ticket to the NCAA Championships.
Lucas Van Klaveren run just missed the cut in the 400m hurdles cut as he ran a 51.84; however, Van Klaveren will still head to the NCAA Championships as he found out earlier this week he will represent UTA in the decathlon after an earlier point total of 7,760 was good enough to qualify him.
Marvin Walford competed in the triple jump and finished at 14.73 in the event.
The women will take the stage on the final day of the prelims on Saturday as
Iyana Gray will look to punch her ticket in the 100 and 200 meter while
Jade Bontke, the 4x100, and the 4x400 will al be in action.
