NEW ORLEANS, La. – A total of 10 Mavericks were named to the USTFCCCA All-American Teams after performing at the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene from June 8-11.
The Mavericks landed three first team All-Americans in
Lucas Van Klaveren,
Bryson DeBerry, and
Arthur Petersen and one second teamer in
Joel Bengtsson. UTA added five more onto the honorable mention team in
Iyana Gray,
Vanessa Ugorji,
Tatyana Terrell,
Adeyemi Talabi, and
Jade Bontke. Gray earned a spot on the honorable mention team twice.
Van Klaveren earned All-American honors in the decathlon after he broke the 8,000-point mark for the first time in his career, finishing with 8,015 points to place fourth, two more than the previous school mark held by Romain Martin in 2013. It was also the 12th best decathlon performance in the history of Van Klaveren's home country of the Netherlands according to World Athletics. It is Van Klaveren's second time earning All-American honors as he was named to the second team in the indoor season.
DeBerry earned his All-American honor after he put together a masterful showing in the high jump. He cleared his first three jumps with relative ease, getting over 2.10m (6-10¾), 2.15m (7-½), and 2.18m (7-1¾) all on his first jump before just missing on 2.21m to place sixth in the event. It is DeBerry's fourth time earning All-American honors, earning that distinction in the indoor and outdoor seasons the last two seasons.
Petersen took home All-American honors in the javelin after he hit on a massive throw of 76.34m (250-5) to sit in first place after the first round of throws. Petersen went on to finish sixth in the event to take his place on the podium. It is his second All-American honor, earning a spot on the second team one year ago.
Bengtsson earned his honors in the 110-meter hurdles among an absolutely loaded field, finishing with a time of 13.65 in the semifinals and a 13th place finish. It is the first time Bengtsson has been named an All-American in his career.
Gray earned two distinctions in the 4x100 and 200 meter dash. Gray, along with Ugorji, Terrell, and Talabi placed 20th overall in the relay with a time of 44.92, while Gray placed 22nd in the 200 with a time of 23.57. It is first time honors for all four ladies.
Finally, Bontke earned her honors in the heptathlon, coming away and finishing 19th in the nation with 5,300 points. It is the second time she has been named an All-American, earning second team honors earlier this year in the indoor season.
UTA placed 25th in the nation on the men's side and will have numerous athletes competing around the globe throughout the summer, including Gray returning to Hayward Field to compete in the U20 Championships.
