NEW ORLEANS – Several UT Arlington men's and women's track and field student-athletes have been honored for their academic successes during the 2021-22 season by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
The Maverick women were named an All-Academic Team, while three members were named All-Academic Athletes in
Jade Bontke,
Liv Cantby, and
Shelby West. It is the second straight season for all three women to garner this honor. On the men's side, two took home the honor for the second consecutive season in
Bryson DeBerry and
Arthur Petersen.
The UTA women posted a cumulative GPA of 3.26 during the indoor and outdoor seasons – well above the minimum 3.0 requirement by the USTFCCCA.
As for the individuals, student-athletes must possess a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 for their career and have met athletic requirements as well, which are as follows for the 2021 season:
- Indoor: Student-athletes must have finished ranked in the top 96 in any championship individual event, or in the top 48 in any championship relay event.
- Outdoor: Student-athletes must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Track and Field Championships, or for multi-events must have finished the season ranked in the top 48 in the East or top 48 in the West regions.
Bontke, an exercise science and biology major, took home All-American honors in both indoor and outdoor seasons in multis and was the top scorer in both the SBC Indoor and Outdoor Championships.
Cantby, an exercise science major, and West, who is pursuing a master of business administration, each competed in the NCAA West Regional Prelims with Cantby competing in the javelin and West in the 400 meter hurdles.
DeBerry, an exercise science major, earned his third and fourth All-American honors in the high jump during the indoor and outdoor season. DeBerry was named a First Team All-American at the outdoor championships after placing sixth.
Petersen, a business major, earned his second straight All-American honor in the outdoor season, getting the first team nod with a sixth place finish in the javelin this season.
It caps an incredible season that saw the Mavs men claim the NCAA Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association (DI-AAA ADA) trophy thanks to finishing in a tie for 25th earlier this month at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. It marks the second-straight year that UTA has won such an honor as the men's indoor team did it in 2020-21.
