Softball Prepares For Three-Day Texas State Classic

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The UT Arlington softball team looks to compete in the Texas State Classic in San Marcos beginning Thursday, Feb. 23 as the Mavericks will take on UTSA, Kansas, Colorado State and the host, Texas State.

UTA sits on an overall record of 5-4 after going 3-2 in last weekend's Tracy Beard College Classic where the Mavs tabbed big wins over No. 16 Kentucky and South Dakota.
 
The Mavericks are set to commence TXST Classic action with a 4:30 p.m. start Thursday evening against the Bobcats followed by a 7 p.m. game against UTSA.
 
UTA will play a doubleheader against Kansas and Colorado State starting at 11 a.m. on Friday before wrapping up the weekend with a 6:30 p.m. game Saturday night to face Texas State for a second time.

UTA NOTES (5-4)
  • UTA is coming off a 2-3 weekend at the Tracy Beard College Classic where the Mavericks took down No. 16 Kentucky 4-2 and South Dakota, 10-0 in five innings.
  • The Mavs' victory over the ranked Wildcats marked the second win over a power-five opponent this season with last Friday's being against head coach Kara Dill's alma mater.
  • An electric offense and a combined shutout from Jessica Adams and Gracie Bumpurs, led the Mavericks on to beat the South Dakota Coyotes, 10-0, in the final game of the three-day tournament.
  • Fifth year Sophie Wideman and sophomore Paris Brienesse share a team-high batting average of .400. Wideman has accumulated six RBI and notched her first home run of the 2023 season this past weekend against Kentucky.
  •  Brienesse has made an immediate impact in a Maverick uniform after starting in her first three games over the weekend. The infielder put up 4 RBI from a grand slam in last Sunday's run-rule victory over South Dakota.
  • On the mound, sophomore righty Adams sits on a 2.13 ERA with a 3-2 record. Across 23 innings, Adams has tossed 11 strike outs.
KNOW YOUR OPPONENT | TEXAS STATE BOBCATS (6-4)
  • Texas State is fresh off a weekend at home as the Bobcats finished 3-2 in the I-35 Tourney at Bobcat Softball Stadium.
  • The team picked up wins over Lamar and South Dakota State, twice.
  • Sophomore Ciara Trahan paces the Bobcat offense with a .387 average at the plate, 12 hits in all 10 games started.
  • Junior utility player JJ Smith has the most RBI on the season with seven and the 3rd-best batting average of .310. Smith has also recorded at least one hit in eight of ten games this season.
  • Right-handed pitcher Jessica Mullins has spent the most time in the circle for Texas State with over 26 innings pitched. Mullins sits on a 2.42 ERA with 21 strike outs on the year.
KNOW YOUR OPPONENT | KANSAS JAYHAWKS (6-4)
  • The Jayhawks recently competed in the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge that featured Cal State Fullerton, Liberty, Ole Miss, Southern Illinois, and Sacramento State.
  • Lyric Moore, Ashlyn Anderson and Olivia Bruno currently hold above a .300 batting average while Moore leads the pack with a .364 average.
  • Not only does Moore hold the highest batting average, but the junior also has the most RBI (11), hits (12) and the highest slugging percentage (.818).
  • Moore, Anderson and Bruno share a team-high of three home runs this year, contributing the Jayhawks' 10 total as a team.
  • Freshman Lizzy Ludwig occupies the lowest ERA on the pitching staff of 0.88 across 16 innings pitched. Ludwig has allowed just two earned runs so far and holds a 2-0 record.
KNOW YOUR OPPONENT | UTSA ROADRUNNERS (3-8)
  • UTSA sits on an overall record of 3-8 after picking up its first two wins last week in the Roadrunner's I-35 Tournament against Abilene Christian and Lamar. The program is coming off its third victory of the season with a 6-5 win over Incarnate Word.
  • Infielder Kat Ibarra leads with a .410 batting average, 16 hits and five doubles.
  • UTSA's Taylor Jenson, Marena Estell, Erykah Guerrero and Kylie Forney share a team-high of two long balls this year.
  • Senior Jamir Gilbert has the greatest number of innings under her belt with over 27 innings of work. Gilbert has tossed 19 strike outs and has appeared in 10 games with a 5.93 ERA.
KNOW YOUR OPPONENT | COLORADO STATE RAMS (7-3)
  • The Colorado State Rams are on a four-game winning streak after winning four of five games this past week at the Cal Baptist Classic in Riverside, Calif. There, the Rams gave a pair of losses to California Baptist and a pair to Pacific.
  • Outfielder Molly Gates obtains the highest batting average on the squad hitting a whopping .500. With a .716 slugging percentage, the junior has tallied 17 hits across 10 games.
  • Senior Peyton Allen has notched the most home runs across CSU's lineup and shares the most RBI with 11 on the season along with Danielle Serna.
  • Sydney Hornbuckle leads the Rams' pitching rotation with over 29 innings and 21 strike outs. Hornbuckle has thrown two complete games with an ERA of 2.73.
ON DECK
The Mavericks will look ahead to their first midweek matchup at No. 22 Baylor next Wednesday, Feb. 28 with a 6 p.m. start time at Getterman Stadium.
