Mavs Take Rubber Match Over Hornets Behind Pointer's Big Game

SACRAMENTO, CA – Tyson Pointer blasts two home runs and ties his career high with five runs driven in as the UT Arlington baseball team (19-17, 9-6 WAC) defeated the Sacramento State Hornets (18-18, 6-9 WAC) 12-10 on Sunday afternoon at John Smith Field.

The Mavericks finished with 11 hits on the day, led by Pointer's aforementioned two home runs, five RBI day, finishing with three hits total. Ryan Black finished with three hits and three runs driven in while scoring twice. Steven Saunders chipped in with three hits while driving in two runs and scoring twice himself.

Wilson Galvan and Tyler Rice each finished with a base hit and scoring a run. Sam Crowell drove in a run on the afternoon while Tanner Rice drew two walks and scored twice.

UTA used four pitchers for the game, with Andrew Lucas getting the start on the mound. Lucas went 1.0 innings and struck out two. Zach Norris relieved Lucas and went 4.0 innings. Norris shoved for those 4 innings, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out five, one shy of his career high. Norris picked up the victory on the mound for the Mavs.

Matt Novis picked up the save, his first of the season. Novis went 3.1 innings while allowing one run on one hit and punching out one Hornet batter.

Sacramento State jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom half of the 1st inning. UTA responded by plating one run in the top of the 2nd off the bat of Steven Saunders, a solo shot to left field, to make it 3-1. The Hornets struck back in the bottom half of the 2nd, plating one run to go back up by three runs.

UTA tied the game in the top of the 3rd inning, plating three runs to make it a 4-4 ball game.

A scoreless 4th and 5th inning brought us to the 6th, where the Mavericks offense exploded for seven runs to go up 11-4. Sacramento State would answer back, plating five in the bottom of the 6th inning to make it a 11-9 ball game.

The Mavs and Hornets would go on to trade runs in the 9th inning, both via home runs to bring the game to a 12-10 score and that's where we would end.

With the win tonight, the Mavericks move back into fourth place, right below Abilene Christian who's in third with the same conference record as the Mavs but own the tiebreaker as they took two of three from UTA.

UTA has now won seven out of their last 10 ball games.
