ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington men's basketball opened the 2024-25 season Monday at the College Park Center with a 90-55 win over UNT Dallas. The Mavs were led by guard
Jaden Wells' 22 points and forward
Raysean Seamster's 19-point, five rebound, five assist performance.
The Mavericks utilized a 20-0 across the end of the first half (16-0 in the final 2:23) and the start of the second half to pull away comfortably from Josh Howard's Trailblazers.
UTA had four players in double figures including Wells and Seamster, as forwards
Diante Smith and
Jaxon Ellingsworth chipped in with 11 and 10, respectively. The Mavs showcased balanced scoring with two more players posting nine points apiece, in forward
Troy Hupstead (who also pulled down 11 boards) and guard
Darius Burford.
In total, nine Mavs made their debuts with the program under second-year head coach
KT Turner.
"I want to tip my hat to them [UNT Dallas]," Turner said in his postgame press conference. "They got a lot better from last year and Josh Howard has done a really good job with that team. We came in wanting to be the aggressor and I feel like we were. But, we've got a lot of things we need to clean up defensively. I felt like we got some really good looks offensively that we'll make in games to come. I was pleased with the guys' energy, like I said we've got a lot to get better at. I wasn't expecting a perfect game today, but at the end of the day, pleased with them."
Wells had 18 of his 22 points come in the first half, while Seamster shot a perfect 8-for-8 from the field. UTA's defense was active at times as well, forcing 21 turnovers, as they picked up 13 steals and held the Trailblazers to just 29.2% shooting. The Mavs scored 44 points in the paint, and led this one from wire to wire.
UTA now readies itself for a homecoming game test on Saturday against Conference USA foe, Louisiana Tech, who opens its season tonight against LSU Alexandria in Ruston.
