THIBODAUX, LA...The University of Texas at Arlington softball squad completed a three-game sweep of Nicholls State University with a 6-2 win at the Lady Colonel Softball Complex on Sunday afternoon. With the win, UTA improved to 14-9 overall and remains undefeated in Southland Conference play with a 6-0 league record.
A Falon Kwasnick single to left and two back-to-back walks loaded the bases for UTA in the top of the first frame. The Lady Mavs plated their first runs of the afternoon on a 2 RBI single by designated player Beverly Rowan. Crystal Krebs singled to left, plating Jenna Fortune and allowing Rowan to score on a fielding error by the NSU left fielder to give the Lady Mavs a 4-0 advantage.
The Lady Colonels managed one run in the bottom of the frame as Stephanie Sasser plated Lindsey Yelverton on a sacrifiec fly to center field.
UTA could only manage one run in the third frame after loading the bases with one out. Autumn Petrino led off reaching first on a dropped third strike by the NSU catcher and was sacrificed to second by Stephanie Owens. Two consecutive fielding errors by Nicholls State loaded the bases for the Lady Mavs. Ali Lommel reached on a fielders choice, plating Petirno and Kwasnick struck out to end the frame.
Nicholls State added one run after an RBI double by Yelverton plated Jen Paray who singled to lead off the inning.
The Lady Mavs added an unearned run in the top of the sixth as April Jones reached on a single and advanced to second on a throwing error by the NSU third baseman. Jones advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jenna Fortune to make the final margin, 6-2.
Junior Katy Cox picked up the win for UTA, improving to 10-3 on the year. Cox struck out six while scattering three hits in 4.0 innings of work. Freshman Jill Garro struck out four and scattered four hits in 3.0 innings of work. Cox and Garro each gave up one earned run.
Texas-Arlington returns to action on Wednesday, March 12, when it plays host to Western Illinois for a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Allan Saxe Field.
