TEXAS-ARLINGTON SOFTBALL TAKES TWIN BILL FROM NICHOLLS STATE

March 8, 2003

THIBODAUX, La...The University of Texas at Arlington Lady Mavericks improved their Southland Conference record to 5-0 after taking a doubleheader from Nicholls State on Saturday afternoon at the Lady Colonel Softball Complex. UTA, now 13-9 overall, won the first game 3-2 in eight innings and the second game, 4-2.

The Lady Colonels scored the first run of the day, as NSU pulled off the double steal in the bottom of the third frame to take a 1-0 lead over the Lady Mavs.

UTA answered in the top of the fourth tying the game at one after an Autumn Petrino double plated Beverly Rowan.

Nicholls took the lead again in the bottom of the fifth on a solo homerun by shortstop Lindsey Yelverton.

UTA pinch runner Jessica Carriger scored on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game at two, and force an extra frame.

April Jones led off the top of the eighth with a single to left. Jenna Fortune sacrificed Jones to second before designated player Beverly Rowan plated Jones on an RBI single up the middle.

The Lady Colonels couldn't plate their lone runner in the bottom of the extra frame giving UTA the win, 3-2.

Junior Katy Cox improved to 9-3 with the win. Cox struck out 12 while allowing five hits and only one earned run.

The Lady Mavs didn't waste any time in the second game, taking an early 1-0 lead after the first frame. Freshman Falon Kwasnick scored the first run after the Lady Colonel pitcher gave up a bases loaded walk.

Nicholls answered in the bottom of the third frame, plating two runs on two hits to give themselves a one run advantage.

UTA quickly answered in the top of the fourth as Kwasnick plated Crystal Krebs and Kristin Blankenship on a double off the left center field wall. The Lady Mavs added an insurance run in the top of the sixth to make the final margin, 4-2, as April Jones scored from first on a throwing error by the NSU third baseman.

Freshman Jill Garro earned the win for the Lady Mavs, improving her record to 4-6. Garro struck out eight and scattered four hits while giving up two earned runs.

Texas-Arlington will close out this conference series tomorrow with a single game at the Lady Colonel Softball Complex. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
