TEXAS-ARLINGTON SOFTBALL TAMES LADY LIONS

ARLINGTON, Texas...The University of Texas at Arlington softball squad continued its winning ways on Saturday as the Lady Mavs swept a doubleheader from Southeastern Louisiana to improve to 8-0 in Southland Conference action and win their seventh consecutive game. UTA will attempt to sweep its third conference series of the year when they play SLU in the series finale tomorrow at 12 p.m.

UTA struck early in game two of the doubleheader, plating one run in the bottom of the first inning. Beverly Rowan plated Jenna Fortune with an RBI triple to put the Lady Mavs ahead, 1-0.

It was Rowan again in the bottom of the third inning plating two runners with an RBI double to center field.

The Lady Mavs struck again in the bottom of the fifth frame as April Jones crossed the plate after a wild pitch by SLU's Natalie Dunagan. Owens knocked her second double of the day to plate Autumn Petrino and put UTA in front, 5-0.

The Lady Lions attepmted to rally in the top of the sixth frame. Three singles, a fielders choice and two errors by UTA's third baseman pushed three runs across the plate for Southeastern to make the score, 5-3.

Freshman Jill Garro earned the win for the Lady Mavs, improving her record to 6-6 on the year. Garro struck out four and gave up only one earned run.

The Lady Mavs took control early in the first game of the afternoon, plating five runs in the bottom of the second frame. A Stephanie Owens RBI single up the middle started the scoring for UTA. Ali Lommel plated Autumn Petrino with a sacrifice fly to right and two RBI doubles, from Falon Kwasnick and Melanie Williams, closed out the scoring to put UTA ahead, 5-0.

UTA continued to score in the third frame as it was Owens again plating the first runner of the inning with an RBI single. Owens came around to score on an error by the SLU catcher. Kwasnick hit a 2 RBI single to plate the final two runs of the inning.

It was much of the same in the bottom of the fourth inning as they Lady Mavs plated four runs on five hits to make the final margin, 13-0.

The UTA bats were on fire as the Lady Mavs connected for a season high 12 hits in the first game of today's doubleheader. Kwasnick,Owens, Petrino, Rowan and Williams each connected for extra base hits.

Junior Katy Cox earned the win for UTA, improving her record to 12-3 on the year. Cox struck out seven and scattered three hits.

Texas-Arlington will close out this weekend's Southland Conference series with Southeastern Louisiana tomorrow with a single game at Allan Saxe Field. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
