NATCHITOCHES, La...The University of Texas at Arlington defeated Northwestern State, 3-1, Sunday afternoon at the Lady Demon Softball Complex to win the three-game Southland Conference series. The Lady Mavs split Saturday's doubleheader with NSU.
Falon Kwasnick gave UTA an early lead, opening the game with a lead off homerun over the left center field wall.
The Lady Demons threatened in the bottom of the fourth frame when two singles and a two out walk loaded the bases for NSU. UTA starter Katy Cox escaped the threat, striking out NSU's Tasha Hess to end the inning.
Jennifer English doubled to right center to lead off the top of the fifth and was sacrificed to third by Stephanie Owens. Ali Lommel then connected for her second extra base hit of the year, as she hit a triple to left center to plate English and put UTA ahead, 2-0. The Lady Mavs took a 3-0 lead on an RBI single to left by Kwasnick.
NSU's designated player Kiana Scott shattered Cox's shutout as she hit a lead off homerun in the bottom of the final frame.
Cox earned the win for UTA, improving to 15-4 on the year. The three-time SLC pitcher of the week struck out 12 and scattered five hits.
