ARLINGTON, Texas...The University of Texas at Arlington softball squad improved to 13-1 in Southland Conference action after sweeping a doubleheader from Texas-San Antonio Saturday evening at Allan Saxe Field. The Lady Mavs defeated the 'Runners 4-0 in game one as Katy Cox threw her first no-hitter of the year. UTA took the nightcap, defeating UTSA, 8-2.
UTA used three singles, a double, a triple and two Roadrunner errors to plate five runs in the bottom of the first inning to start the nightcap.
The scoring continued for the Lady Mavs in the bottom of the second frame. Autumn Petrino hit a two-out single, followed by a Stephanie Owens walk to put runners on first and second for Natalie Mullen. Mullen connected for a double off the right field wall to plate both base runners and give UTA a 7-0 advantage after only two innings.
UTSA plated two runs in the top of the fourth on a triple by Jenny Garcia.
Back to back singles by Crystal Krebs and Ali Lommel put runners on first and second to start off the bottom of the fifth. Pinch runner Katie Singleton scored as Melanie Williams reached on an error by the UTSA second baseman.
With the win, freshman Jill Garro improved to 7-8 on the year. Garro struck out seven while allowing only four hits.
The Lady Mavericks took an early lead in game one, plating three runs in the home half of the first inning. Falon Kwasnick reached on a lead off walk and was sacrificed to second by Melanie Williams. Beverly Rowan singled up the middle to plate Kwasnick for the first run of the game. Autumn Petrino followed with a walk, putting runners on first and second for UTA. A wild pitch advanced both runners before Jennifer English doubled to right center plating both runners and giving UTA a 3-0 lead.
UTA added its final run in the second frame as Cathy Calvert scored on an infield single by Melanie Williams, giving UTA a 4-0 advantage.
Junior pitcher Katy Cox pitched her first no-hitter of the season as she improved to 16-4 on the year. Cox struck out 16 in seven innings of work.
Texas-Arlington returns to action next weekend, April 5-6, for a three-game Southland Conference series at second place Southwest Texas.
