ARLINGTON, Texas...The University of Texas at Arlington Lady Mavericks suffered their first loss at Allan Saxe Field on Sunday as Louisiana-Monroe edged past UTA, 3-2, in a back and forth game that went 10 complete innings. The Lady Mavs tied the game at two in the bottom of the seventh to force the extra innings. With the loss, UTA fell to 30-14 overall and 18-3 in the Southland Conference.
Louisiana-Monroe took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning as catcher Casey Goodman hit a solo homerun over the left center field wall. The Lady Indians added an unearned run in the top of the next frame, as desginated player Anna Hancock hit a RBI single to plate Loren Dixon.
The Lady Mavs, down for the first time in this series, cut the two run deficit by plating one unearned run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Pinch runner April Jones scored as the ULM third baseman misplayed a hard hit ball by third baseman Jennifer English.
Back to back one out singles by Falon Kwasnick and Melanie Williams put runners in scoring position with for UTA in the bottom of the seventh inning. Autumn Petrino hit a RBI single to plate Kwasnick and tie the game at two and force extra innings.
The Lady Mavericks escaped a ULM threat in the top of the eighth as the Lady Indians had runners on the corners with only one out and their top hitter, Casey Goodman, at the plate. The UTA defense stepped up as catcher Beverly Rowan threw out Courtney Tuggle as she attempted to steal second, and UTA starter Katy Cox struck out Goodman to end the inning.
Louisiana-Monroe plated one unearned run in the top of the tenth frame as UTA's Jenna Fortune made a throwing error which allowed Kate Schaper to cross the plate and put the Lady Indians ahead, 3-2, with one out.
The Lady Mavs couldn't match ULM in the bottom of the frame, as the Lady Indians handed UTA only its third conference loss of the year.
Cox was tagged with her first league loss of the season as she fell to 21-6 on the year. She struck out 12 and walked none in 10.0 innings of work.
Texas-Arlington returns to action Friday, April 18 when it hosts Sam Houston State for a Southland Conference series at Allan Saxe Field. First pitch in Friday's doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
