ARLINGTON, Texas...No. 16 Baylor put four runs on the board in the first inning and three runs in the ninth inning, but it was not enough as Texas-Arlington scored 10 runs in between for a 10-8 victory Tuesday evening at Clay Gould Ballpark. This was UTA's first victory over the Bears in the last seven opportunities.
The Bears got on the board early as the first three batters reached base, with the third a run producing single by catcher Chris Ford. With one out, Michael Griffin delivered a three-run bomb over the left center field wall.
The Mavericks got back in the game in the second inning as Chris Taylor led off with a double down the left field line. Dustin Duncan followed with a base on balls which ended with a ball well over the catcher's head for a wild pitch advancing Taylor to third. Robby Deevers followed with a deep sacrifice fly to right field. Darrell Preston followed with a base on balls and both Preston and Duncan advanced on a balk by starting pitcher Sean Walker. With two outs, Kasey Baker delivered a single back through the box scoring both runners.
Ryan Roberts tied the game up in the third inning as blasted the first pitch of the inning over the left field wall for his 10th home run of the season.
UTA took the lead in the fourth inning as Aaron Batlle hit his first home run of his UTA career over the right field wall scoring himself and Preston, who walked earlier in the inning.
The Mavs threatened in the sixth inning as they loaded the bases with one out, but reliever Ryan LaMotta struck out Roberts and got Hunter Pence to fly out to right to end the threat.
UTA got some insurance in the seventh inning as Taylor led off with a double to right center field. Duncan followed with a base on balls and Deevers plated Taylor with a double to left center field. Preston followed with a bloop down the left field line that fell between three players plating Duncan. After Dustin Bozarth advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt, Baker delivered his second two run single through the left side.
BU got a run back in the eighth inning as a walk and bloop single over second base put runners on the corners. A wild pitch by Chris Reed allowed the runner from third to score.
The Bears made it a game in the ninth inning as Kyle Reynolds belted a three-run homer to trim the lead to two.
Josh Condon (2-1) picked up the victory by pitching 3.1 innings of scoreless ball allowing only two hits, while striking out four. Sean Walker (5-3) took the loss by allowing five earned runs on four hits in 3.0 innings of work. Mike Snapp earned his third save of the season by
Baker led the offense with three hits and four runs batted in. Roberts and Taylor each collected two hits apiece.
The Mavericks return to action Friday afternoon, April 11, as they travel to San Antonio to take on the Roadrunners of Texas-San Antonio. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
