AUSTIN, Texas - The University of Texas at Arlington Lady Maverick softball squad dropped its third straight game Saturday morning as it fell to Southland Conference foe Sam Houston State, 4-2, on the second day of the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational.
The Bearkats scratched early, putting up two runs in the bottom of the first inning. SHSU's Chrissy Dileo slapped a single to left, knocking in the first run of the day before Shelly Sleep earned a bases loaded walk to push a second run across for the 'Kats.
UTA didn't answer until the third inning when Jenna Fortune knocked a two RBI single through the right side to tie the game.
After a Stephanie Mosley single in the bottom of the sixth frame, Sleep knocked her first home run of the season to put the 'Kats ahead, 4-2.
The Lady Mavericks had their chances in the seventh after April Jones singled up the middle to start the frame and Dee Jay Nelson followed with a walk. Amanda Haney continued to aid the Lady Mav's threat with a single, but Jones was thrown out at home as she attepmted to score. With only one out, Nelson and Haney each advanced a base on a wild pitch to put runners on second and third for the Lady Mavs. UTA couldn't muster a run as lead-off batter Falon Kwasnick hit into a fielders choice and Nelson was thrown out at home before Katie Singleton struck out to end the game.
Kwasnick got the start for the Lady Mavs in the circle. The sophomore tossed 6.0 innings, striking out three and being touched for only five hits.
SHSU's Melissa Hayslip earned the win for the 'Kats as she improved to 1-0 on the year.
