ARLINGTON, Texas - In a game that was started yesterday and halted in the second inning due to rain, Texas-Arlington put together one of their best offensive days as they pounded out 20 hits in defeating Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 18-2 in the rubber match at Clay Gould Ballpark on Sunday afternoon.
The Mavericks (11-7) staked to a 1-0 lead yesterday in the first inning on a leadoff home run by Kasey Baker, his first of the season. Baker was not done yet as he came back out Sunday and finished the day 5-for-5 with three RBIs, marking the 26th time that a Maverick has collected five hits in a game.
Baker was not the only Mav to have a great day at the plate as catcher Brett Lewis had a season-high four hits and four runs batted in. The nine hole hitter also scored four runs in raising his average to .283 on the season.
UTA collected three home runs in the game as Ryan Nelson connected on his fourth and Daniel Macha hit his first collegiate home run.
The Mavericks came out and pushed across six runs in the second inning before the Islanders (12-13) even knew what hit them.
That was more than enough for the UTA pitching staff as Chris Reed, Jake Baxter, Mike Snapp and Mark Lowed combined to allow two uearned runs on only six hits. Baxter picked up the victory by going four innings, allowing one unearned run on one hit, while striking out three. Michael Haftfield (0-2) took the loss after allowing six earned runs on three hits in 1.1 innings of work.
The Mavericks return to action on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 16-17, when they travel to Edinburg for a two-game set with Texas-Pan American. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. on Tuesday and 2 p.m. on Wednesday.
