ARLINGTON, Texas - The Texas-Arlington baseball team took advantage of four Sam Houston State errors and turned them into four unearned runs in defeating the Bearkats 6-1 in the series finale Sunday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.
UTA (14-9, 2-1) jumped on the board in the first inning as Kasey Baker started the game with a base on balls and was sacrificed to second by Aaron Batlle. Hunter Pence beat out an infield single to first base and when Andrew Kasparek's throw sailed over the pitcher's head, Baker came into score. After reaching on a fielder's choice, Paul Bruder came around to score when right fielder Dustin Martin dropped a fly ball down the right field line off the bat of Ryan Nelson.
The Mavs added a run in the third inning as Baker connected on his second home run of the season over the left field wall for a solo shot.
UTA's fourth run of the game came in the fourth inning as after reaching on an error, Ryan Nelson came around to score on a Brett Lewis double down the left field line.
UTA added another unearned run in the sixth inning as Bruder reached on a throwing error by shortstop Jeremy Holzbach and advanced to second on a balk and third on a groudnout. Dane Ryan plated the run with a double to the left center field gap.
SHSU (5-15-1, 1-2) got their only run of the game in the seventh inning as Josh Aranda doubled to right center and came in to score on a Holzbach single to right field.
The Mavs got the run back in the eighth as Pence singled up the middle to start the inning and later scored on a Darrell Preston pinch hit RBI single up the middle.
Grant Varnell (2-3) earned the victory by allowing one run on eight hits in 6.2 innings of work. He struck out five in the game and lowered his ERA to 5.45. Chris Gressett (0-3) took the loss after allowing five runs, one earned, on four hits in 5.1 innings of work.
Pence was the only Maverick to have a pair of hits for his 16th multi-hit game of the season. Marshall Williams led the Bearkats with two hits.
The Mavericks return to action Tuesday afternoon as they travel to Stillwater, Okla. to take on Oklahoma State. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
