SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Texas-San Antonio exploded for three home runs to defeat The University of Texas at Arlington 6-3 Saturday afternoon in Southland Conference softball action at Roadrunner Field in San Antonio. The squads will complete the doubleheader this afternoon, and close out the series with a single game beginning Sunday at 1 p.m.
Texas-San Antonio got on the board first in the bottom of the first frame after a lead off single by Jenny Garcia and a Jessica Rogers home run put the 'Runners in front 2-0.
UTA answered in the top of the third after Falon Kwasnick walked and Katie Singleton doubled to left field with only one out. Freshman Dee Jay Nelson plated both runners with a single to left center to tie the game at two runs apiece.
The 'Runners added three runs in the bottom of the fourth after Krystal Gibson knocked a three-run homer to regain the lead.
UTSA added its final run of the afternoon after Christy Brownlee hit the third Roadrunner home run of the day.
A Kwasnick RBI single to left plated Amanda Haney who double earlier in the inning as the Lady Mavericks pulled within three of the host 'Runners.
Jill Garro (6-6) was tagged with the loss after giving up nine hits and four walks in a complete game effort.
UTA pounded out eight hits in the game, paced by Kwasnick (2), Singleton (2) and Haney (2), but left nine runners on base as it fell to UTSA 6-3 in the first game of today's doubleheader.
