THIBODAUX, La. - The University of Texas at Arlington softball squad split Friday's Southland Conference doubleheader at Nichollls State. After dropping game one 3-2 in 10 innings, the Lady Mavericks rebounded for 3-2 victory over the Colonels. UTA improves to 19-20-1 and 11-8 in the league.
A three-run third inning was all the Lady Mavs needed to edge past Nicholls State in the nightcap. Courtni Anderson led off the frame with a single, followed by an April Jones walk before Falon Kwasnick's RBI single sent Anderson home. Autumn Petrino and Jenna Fortune followed with back-to-back run-producing singles to put UTA in front 3-0.
Freshman Lauren Hebert (7-6) earned the win after striking out six in a complete game effort. Anderson, Kwasnick, Petrino paced the Lady Mavs with two hits apiece.
In the first game of the afternoon Nicholls State used a two-run homer to tie the game in the sixth. The squads remained deadlocked until an error by UTA's Hebert allowed a runner to score in the bottom of the tenth.
Hebert suffered the loss in a relief effort while Fortune and Beverly Rowan paced the offense with two hits apiece.
Texas-Arlington will face the Colonels in the rubber game of the series Saturday at noon.
