COWBOYS COMPLETE SWEEP OF MAVERICKS

LAKE CHARLES, Louisiana - The Texas-Arlington baseball team could not get back on the winning track as McNeese State scored early and often in defeating the Mavs 7-3 to complete the three-game sweep at Cowboy Diamond.

The Cowboys (23-23, 10-11 SLC) pushed across a pair of runs in the second inning as Chris Fontenot singled to start the inning and stole second. Joe Hulett plated the runner with a single through the right side before scoring himself on a Dustin Smith single to right field.

MSU added a run in the third as Brian Bernhardt drew a leadoff walk and scored on Charlie Kingery's double to right center.

The Cowboys added to the lead in the fourth inning as Dustin Schroer doubled to center field and scored on Bernhardt's triple to right center field. Kingery drove in Bernhardt with a single to right field.

Schroer added two runs for the Cowboys in the fifth inning an inside the park homer to right center.

UTA (26-22, 10-11 SLC) finally got on the board in the sixth inning as Hunter Pence was hit by a pitch and Darrell Preston drew a walk. Paul Bruder followed with an RBI single to right field and Dane Ryan singled to center to load the bases with one out. Daniel Macha followed with a flyout to center field and Carey Avants did the same after hitting the previous pitch foul over the right field wall.

The Mavs got a pair of runs in the eighth inning as Preston singled up the middle and Bruder followed with a base on balls. Macha plated the first run with a double off the right field wall and Avants plated Bruder with a sacrifice fly to center field.

Baker, Preston and Ryan each collected two hits for the Mavs. Smith led the Cowboys with three hits.

Grant Varnell (3-4) took the loss after allowing three runs on six hits in two innings of work. John Doerfler (5-4) picked up the victory by
