LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The Lady Mavericks used an unearned run in the top of the seventh inning to edge past Missouri-Kansas City, 3-2, in the opening game of the 2005 New Mexico State Tournament in Las Cruces.
The Kangaroo's took a 2-0 lead after plating two runs on three hits to close out the second frame.
UTA (2-3) hit back, plating two runs in the top of the third. After Lacey Leadbetter reached and advanced to second on an error by the Kangaroo's second baseman, Katie Singleton beat out an infield single to put runners at first and second for the Lady Mavs. Dee Jay Nelson knocked a two-RBI double to plate the runs and put UTA in front.
The Lady Mavericks loaded the bases to open the final frame after Kathleen Bradshaw single up the middle, Amanda Swofford reached on a fielding error and Leadbetter beat out an infield hit. After a Jenna Fortune line out, Singleton reached on a fielders choice to load the bases for the second time in the inning. Nelson connected for her second hit of the day to drive in the game-winning run.
Nelson was key for the Lady Mavs, going 2-for-3 at the plate and knocking in all three of UTA's runs. Jill Garro (1-2) earned her first win of the 2005 campaign after tossing the complete game and allowing just two runs on five hits while striking out 11 hitters.
The Lady Mavericks will continue tournament action against Arkansas at 11 a.m. today.
