Box Score
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Two run-producing hits in the top of the fifth inning and an insurance run in the sixth was all the Lady Mavericks needed to defeat Arkansas, 3-0, at the Islander Invitational Friday. With the win, Texas-Arlington improves to 4-6 on the year.
Katie Jones kept the Lady Mavs alive in the fifth with a two-out double to right center. A wild pitch advanced Jones to third before Courtni Anderson knocked a RBI single to the gap in left. Lacey Leadbetter matched Jones with an extra base hit of her own, plating Anderson and giving UTA a 2-0 advantage.
With two outs in the sixth frame, an Autumn Petrino single and stolen base followed by a Jenna Fortune walk put runners at first and second for UTA. Amanda Swofford singled to plate Petrino, but Jones struck out to end the inning and the Lady Mavs threat.
Jill Garro improved to 2-3 on the year after being touched for nine hits and striking out five in a complete game effort.
Texas-Arlington returns to the field Saturday at 9:30 a.m. to face tourney host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
