HAMMOND, La. - Dee Jay Nelson had a season high four RBIs and the Lady Mavericks pounded out 11 hits but in the end it was Southeastern Louisiana who used a three-run 10th inning to edge past Texas-Arlington 7-6 Saturday afternoon in game one of a Southland Conference doubleheader at North Oak Park.
With the loss, UTA falls to 8-16 on the year and 4-6 in the league.
The Lady Lions broke open a scoreless game in the bottom of the fourth inning after back-to-back singles and a K. Smith home run gave SLU a 3-0 advantage.
UTA cut its deficit in the following frame as Nelson knocked a two-run shot after Lacey Leadbetter reached on a single.
SLU used an unearned run in the sixth to extend its lead. An infield single, a blooper to right field and an error by the Lady Mavs right fielder plated the run.
Nelson connected for her second hit of the afternoon, a two-RBI single to even the score at four runs apiece.
UTA starter Jill Garro worked the Lions in order in the seventh to send the game to extra frames.
Each team remained scoreless through two before the international tiebreaker began in the tenth.
April Clougherty was placed on second to open the top of the tenth frame for UTA. After being sacrificed to third, Clougherty would score on an Autumn Petrino base hit up the middle. The Lady Mavs added an insurance run after Amanda Swofford worked a bases loaded walk.
SLU answered in the home half of the tenth after a bases loaded throwing error by Swofford plated two runs to even the score. Szmergalski knocked the game winner up the middle with two outs to give SLU the win.
Garro was tagged with the loss after tossing 9.2 innings and allowing seven runs (three earned) while striking out six.
The squads will close out today's doubleheader before playing the series finale Sunday at 12 p.m.
