BEAUMONT, Texas - Senior Daniel Macha came off the bench to go 2-for-2 with two doubles and a pair of RBIs as Texas-Arlington defeated Lamar 11-1 in eight innings to take two-of-three games from the preseason favorite in the opening weekend of Southland Conference play. The game was halted after the eighth inning due to the conference 10-run rule.
UTA (12-13, 2-1 SLC) got the offense rolling in the first inning as Brett Lewis hit a one-out single to right field and advanced to second on a Ryan Nelson groundout. Aaron Batlle drove in the runner with a single to center field. Scott Williams reached on an error and Joe Newman continued his strong week at the plate with a two-run double into the gap in right center field.
The Mavs added to their lead in the fourth inning as they pushed across four more runs against LU starter William Delage. Newman walked, Justin Stevens singled through the left side and Boomer Welles was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Josh McSpadden drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to center field. Nathan Warrick singled to left field to load the bases again and Lewis plated all three runners with a single to left center.
UTA reached double digits in the seventh inning as Ryan Nelson was hit by a pitch and found himself on third after two straight groundouts. Newman and Stevens followed with a pair of walks and Macha plated two with a double to left center. McSpadden drove in the third run with a single to short.
LU (16-9, 1-2 SLC) plated its only run of the game in the home half of the seventh as Will Henderson started the inning with a double and scored on a Matt Lambeth single to left center.
UTA got the run back in the eighth as Lewis walked and came around to score on a throwing error.
Lewis led the offense with two hits and three RBIs, while Newman and Macha each had two hits and drove in two. Lewis, Newman and Stevens each scored two runs as the first eight hitters in the lineup scored at least one run.
Jake Baxter improved his record to 5-0 as he tossed a complete game, allowing just one run on 10 hits while striking out six. Delage (1-2) took the loss as he allowed seven runs, five earned, in four innings of work.
The Mavs return to action when they travel to take on Sam Houston State on March 25-27.
