BEARKATS POUNCE LADY MAVERICKS IN 8-0 RUN-RULE VICTORY

March 25, 2005

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Texas - Sam Houston State scored early and often as the Bearkats showed why they are one of the top teams in the Southland Conference in an 8-0 run-rule win over Texas-Arlington in the nightcap of Friday's doubleheader in Arlington. UTA claimed the series opener by a 2-1 count.

The Bearkats scored first for the second straight game, plating two runs in the top of the second frame. Tanya Hooser worked a lead off walk and Amanda Collier knocked a double to right center to plate Hooser from first base for the first run of the game. Lauren Boone connected for a run-producing single to plate Collier and give the 'Kats a two run lead.

A Sam Houston State four run third inning chased UTA starter Lauren Hebert from the contest. With one down, Elizabeth Gibson knocked a solo home run over the wall in dead center field pushing the 'Kats advantage to three runs. Kara Reeves extended the lead to six with a three-run shot, her third round-tripper of the season, after Hebert gave up back-to-back singles. Laura Jones, making just her second appearance this season, relieved Hebert and enticed a pop out to end the inning.

The 'Kats continued in the fourth as Boone worked her second walk of the game to lead off the frame. Sarah Mosley singled and Crissy Dileo advanced both runners with a sacrifice. Gibson plated both runners with a single to the gap in right center to give the 'Kats an 8-0 lead.

UTA (9-19, 5-9) managed just two base runners in the contest as Lacey Leadbetter earned a free pass to open the third inning and April Clougherty singled in the fourth.

Lauren Hebert suffered her fifth straight loss and falls to 3-7 on the year. Hebert was touched for six runs on seven hits in just 2.2 innings of work. Jones tossed 2.1 innings of relief, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out two.

The squads will close out this three-game Southland Conference series on Saturday with a 1 p.m. matinee at Allan Saxe Field.
