ARLINGTON, Texas - Texas-Arlington's Dee Jay Nelson doubled to left center field to plate the game-winning run as the Lady Mavericks edged past league-leading Sam Houston State 2-1 in game one of a Southland Conference doubleheader Friday evening at Allan Saxe Field.
Three straight hits, including a Sarah Mosley double, gave the Bearkats an early 1-0 lead over the Mavs.
UTA evened the score in the home half of the third with one run of their own. Lacey Leadbetter worked a leadoff walk and advanced on a Courtni Anderson single. Leadbetter came around to score as April Clougherty beat out an infield single.
Clougherty led off the Lady Mavs sixth with a single down the right field line and Nelson broke the deadlock with a double to left center plating Clougherty.
Jill Garro improved to 4-10 on the year after striking out five in a complete game effort. Clougherty paced the Mavs two hits, a run scored and a RBI.
Shalayne Blythe (7-7) was tagged with the loss for the Bearkats after allowing two runs on five hits.
The squads will meet for the nightcap of today's doubleheader at 6:15 p.m. before closing out the three-game set on Saturday at 1 p.m.
