Box Score
ARLINGTON, Texas - Cooper Fouts' RBI push bunt in the top of the ninth inning capped off a rally as No. 25 Texas Tech scored two runs in the inning to defeat Texas-Arlington 5-4 Tuesday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.
Brian Capps started the inning by drawing a four-pitch walk and Chris Williams was hit by the next pitch. Joseph Callender put down a bunt to the left side and the look at third before the turn to first did not even allow a throw to get off. With the bases loaded, David Steffey lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to tie the score. Tech attempted the suicide squeeze, but it was fouled off. On the next pitch, Fouts pushed a bunt down the first base line allowing the run to score.
The Red Raiders (18-8) got rolling in the first inning as Cody Fuller was hit by a pitch to start the game and came around to score on Capps' towering two-run homer to right field.
The Mavs (15-14) pushed a run across in the third inning as Cary Nelson beat out an infield single to the left of the mound and stole second base. After advancing to third on a Scott Williams groundout to the right side, Cary Nelson raced home from third on a sacrifice fly to right field off the bat of Josh McSpadden.
UTA tied the score up in the sixth inning as Williams was hit by a pitch and stole second. With two outs, Brett Lewis ripped a shot to third that was gloved, but mishandled by first baseman Trey Stewart, allowing Williams to race around and score from second.
TT took the lead in the top of the eighth inning as Matt Smith doubled off the right field wall and cam around to score on a Carey Avants sacrifice fly to center field.
The Mavs took their first lead of the game in the home half of the eighth as McSpadden ripped a one-out single through the left side. Wilson and Brett Lewis drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Aaron Batlle hit a one hopper to first, but the throw home was dropped by the catcher to allow one run to score. Kyle Thomason gave UTA the lead with a sacrifice fly to right field.
Russell Reichenbach (0-2) took the loss as he allowed two runs without retiring a batter. Zach Butler (4-0) earned the victory as he allowed one hit over 1.2 innings of work as TT used seven pitchers on the day.
Jeremiah Haar started for UTA and after allowing two runs in the first, did not allow another run over the next four innings.
The Mavs return to action on April 1-3 for a three-game Southland Conference series against Louisiana-Monroe. The series is set to get underway at 7 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark.
