AUSTIN, Texas - UT-Arlington outfielder Katie Jones will never forget her first collegiate home run.
Wednesday's memory is for the rockin' chair and a story for the grandkids down the road as she tells of how she hit a home run against U.S. Olympian Cat Osterman.
Osterman, who will break virtually every pitching record in the NCAA records books before the end of her career at The University of Texas later this season, watched a shutout go by the boards with Jones' homer. Nevertheless, the second-ranked Longhorns overpowered UTA 5-1 and 9-1 in a doubleheader at McCombs Field here Wednesday night.
Ths losses end a five-game winning streak for UTA (6-6) who opens conference play against McNeese State Saturday in Arlington. Texas improved to 18-1 overall.
Osterman, the National Player of the Week, improved to 11-0 in game one. She allowed three hits, including Joneses shot to left field. Jill Garro (3-3) scattered nine hits and allowed two earned runs over six innings, but three Mav errors allowed three more runs to score.
In the nightcap, Texas manufactured three runs on four singles and an error for quick 3-0 lead. Starting pitcher Laura Jones (2-1) lasted three batters before Nicki Wilson came in and finished the game.
Senior outfielder Autumn Petrino went 2-for-3 at the plate, including an RBI single up the middle to score Jones in the sixth inning.
