Senior pitcher Jill Garro allowed a pair of runs in the first inning and then shutout Texas Tech the rest of the way for a 3-2 victory in the opening game of a doubleheader at Allan Saxe Field Wednesday afternoon.
UTA, now 25-13 overall, defeated a Big 12 Conference team for the first time since a 4-3 win over Texas during the 2001 season. Texas Tech stands at 15-24 and will travel to North Texas for a doubleheader Thursday afternoon.
UTA scored three runs on two hits in the bottom of the fourth inning to take the lead. Courtney Anderson walked with the bases loaded to score pinch runner Adika Snider. April Clougherty singled to center field to score Jenna Fortune to tie the game at 2-2. UTA took the lead when Courtni Anderson hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Lacey Leadbetter for the game-winning run.
In the nightcap, Tech pitcher Sarah Losleben (1-5) and Erin Crawford combined on a six-hit shutout for a 4-0 victory.
Laura Jones (8-3) took the loss, allowing two earned runs on nine hits.
UTA will conclude its home schedule this weekend in a three-game series against Southland Conference leader Texas State. A single game is set for Friday at 7 p.m. and a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
