Junior Deejay Nelson's single to center field scored Katie Jones from second base in the bottom of the 10th inning as UT Arlington rallied to defeat Texas State 2-1 in Southland Conference softball action Saturday afternoon.
UT Arlington scored its first runs of the series in the tenth after falling behind 1-0 when Texas State's Jill Kloesel scored from third base on a passed ball with two outs in the top of the inning.
With the tie-breaker rule in effect in the tenth inning, April Clougherty was placed on second base to begin the inning. Jones double to left center field with one out to score Clougherty. After Jenna Fortune lined out to second base, Nelson delivered the game-winning hit.
UTA's Laura Jones (9-3) and Texas State's Sarah Lancour delivered solid pitching performances. Jones allowed seven hits and struck out eight. Lancour (12-8) scattered nine hits and struck out five in the loss.
Texas State (29-15, 15-2) had its 15-game league winning streak snapped while UT Arlington (26-14, 14-4) assured themselves of a top three seed in the upcoming Southland Conference Postseason Tournament, May 5-7, in Natchitoches, La.
The second game of the doubleheader is currently underway. UT Arlington will travel to Stephen F. Austin for a three-game series next Saturday in Nacogdoches, Texas.
Meanwhile, UTA worked Trahan deep into the count consistently in the first four innings, but Trahan was able to wiggle out of jams.
In the bottom of the second inning, an error by the Bobcats' Newton put Amanda Swofford on second base with one out. But Trahan got April Clougherty to foul out to left field and had Lacey Leadbetter ground out to Newton at shortstop.
In the fourth inning, Deejay Nelson opened the inning with a single and an error by Jill Kloesel to put Nelson on second base. Cleanup hitter Jenna Fortune fouled out to left field and Courtni Anderson and Swofford followed with back-to-back strike outs to end the threat.
The series ends Saturday with a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
