Long Beach, Calif. - UT Arlington drops to 1-6 on the season after a 90-64 loss to Wichita State Sunday evening at the Beach Classic tournament in Long Beach, Calif.
Despite four lead changes in the opening minutes, the Mavericks were unable to hold on to their lead. The Wichita State Shockers went on a 16-point run in the middle of the first half taking a 31-11 lead.
"They got to us early and we played on our heels early," said head coach Samantha Morrow. "We had too many turnovers. We were loose with the ball and they were very aggressive."
Wichita State grabbed 19-points off of UT Arlington's turnovers as well as ten fast break points, which helped the Shockers to a 43-23 lead at the end of the first half.
In the opening minutes of the second half, the Mavericks kept pace with the Shockers with each team coming away with 11 points.
"I thought the second half we played much better, much more aggressive and took the ball to the hole more," said Morrow.
Sophomore Malaika Green scored a season high 13 points while also grabbing two rebounds in 26 minutes. Freshman Takiyah Langford came away with ten points and five rebounds.
Wichita State's Jessica Diamond scored a season high 19 points and 4 assists.
The Mavericks play again Monday, December 19 in the Beach Classic tournament at the Walter Pyramid against Western Michigan in a consolation game.
