July 12, 2016

ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT Arlington sports year was filled with upsets, championships, buzzer-beaters and memorable performances that will go down in Maverick history.

Leading up to the 2016-17 seasons beginning with UTA volleyball in August, UTA Athletics is making sure we do not forget the accomplishments of the past season. Running from June through August, we will be counting down the top-15 moments and performances with "Best of 2015-16" features.

Moment No. 8: Erick Neal records UTA's first-ever triple-double

It is very rare that a top moment comes from a game that ends in a loss. However, Erick Neal did so in earning the program's first-ever triple-double on Jan. 28 at ULM.

The Mavericks fell in the contest 99-88 against a tough squad that was undefeated at home. Neal's performance, however, will go down in history.

Neal posted a career-high 27 points, had 12 assists, and earned 10 rebounds, included the triple-double clincher in the final minute on a rebound in the quarter. Neal shot a blistering 10-14 from the floor, including knocking down five 3-pointers on just seven attempts.

"That's an awesome game," UT Arlington coach Scott Cross said after the achievement. "To have a triple-double speaks volumes to what he did out there on the floor. We need some more guys to step up. We didn't lose the game on the offensive end tonight, we lost it on the defensive end. We've got to do better. We let them shoot 54 percent and that's not UT Arlington basketball."

Neal finished the season amongst the top of the Sun Belt scoring leaders with 12.7 points per game, 1.7 steals, and a 2.4 assists/turnover ratio. The stellar season earned Neal second-team honors on the National Association of Basketball Coaches 2015-16 All-District 24 quad, and a first-team selection to the Sun Belt All-Conference teams.

Neal's direction also helped the Mavericks set several team single-season offensive records, including most points (2,762), assists (590) and 3-pointers (307). UTA also went 24-11 to match the single-season record for wins and made the program's deepest postseason run by reaching the CollegeInsider.com Tournament quarterfinals.
