@UTAMavsVB Season Ends In NIVC Quarterfinals

VERMILLION, S.D. – The UT Arlington volleyball team finished their season Tuesday night, falling in a five-set match to South Dakota (21-25, 25-22, 15-25, 25-23, 11-15) in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) Quarterfinals.

The Mavericks hit .147 as a team with 54 kills.  Brooke Townsend (13), Madison Hill (11) and Bre Walp (11) each finished with double-digit kills. Defensively, Madelyn St. Germain (21) and Petra Manderson (15) led the team in digs.

SET 1
The Mavs dropped the first two points, but quickly responded by winning six of the next eight to take an early 6-4 lead. From there the Yotes caught fire, winning 11 of the following 15 points to take a 15-10 lead at the media timeout. Trailing 23-16, the Mavs rattled off four straight points to force a South Dakota timeout. The Yotes came out of the timeout and won two of the next three to take the set 25-21.

SET 2
Set two became one of runs for both teams. The two teams battle through the first part of the set, but with the set tied 7-7, South Dakota went on a 6-2 run to take a 13-9 lead. A well-timed UTA timeout slowed the Yote momentum and allowed the Mavericks catch fire, going on a 11-2 run to a late lead. With a 21-16 lead, South Dakota cut the UTA lead to one with a 4-0 run. The Mavs held off the late rally, winning the set 25-22 with a block from Manderson and Hill.

SET 3
Leading 6-5 early on in the set, the Coyotes extended their lead with a 5-1 run with three points coming from Maverick attacking errors. The Mavericks would cut the lead to two, but never overcame the deficit, falling 25-15.

SET 4
The teams traded blows through the early going, but the Mavs took a 14-11 lead midway through using a 5-0 run. The Yotes fought back into the set, trailing by three to cut the lead to just one at 17-16 and force a Maverick timeout. The Mavs pushed their lead back to three following a service error and St. Germain ace. The Mavs held onto the lead the rest of the way, winning 25-23 and forcing a fifth set.

SET 5
After winning the first point, the Mavs lost four straight points to put themselves into a 4-1 hole.  They fought back, cutting their deficit to one, but a 3-0 run by the Coyotes made the score 8-4 as they switched sides. The Mavs were unable to overcome the four-point deficit, falling 15-11 and losing the match 3-2.
