ARLINGTON, Texas – David Moffat allowed just one run over seven innings as the UT Arlington baseball team (14-17, 5-4 Sun Belt) clinched a series win over Coastal Carolina (15-11, 2-4 Sun Belt) on Monday morning 5-1 at Clay Gould Ballpark. It marks the first series win over Coastal Carolina since joining the Sun Belt.
"It's two weekends in a row that we've came back from a game one loss to win the series, against two good clubs," said head coach
Darin Thomas. "It says we've got what it takes. Any time we can win a series against [Coastal Carolina] we're going to be happy."
Moffat (W, 3-1) threw seven innings in the win, with the first six being shutouts. The junior struck out six batters, while allowing just one run off five hits.
Michael Wong (S, 4) earned the save allowing just one hit in two shutout innings from the bump.
The Mavericks finished with six hits but made the most of their opportunities.
Boone Montgomery finished 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI and one run scored.
Phillip Childs,
Andrew Miller,
Josh Minjarez and
Tommy Williams each finished with one hit.
Connor Aube and Minjarez drove in one run a piece.
Scoring had to wait until the third inning to get started. Following a single from
Boone Montgomery, the Mavericks used a Chanticleer mishap to score their first run.
Wyatt Divis hit a ground ball to third base, but an errant throw allowed Montgomery to score from first, while Divis reached third base. With the next at-bat, Aube hit a deep ball to center field to score Divis on a sac fly as the Mavs took a 2-0 lead.
UTA would plate one more in the bottom of the fourth to take a three-run advantage. Childs led off with a single and stole second to get into scoring position. Minjarez hit a line drive down the left field line to push Childs past home plate.
Two innings later, the Mavericks were back in business thanks to a single and hit-by-pitch. Montgomery singled to left field, scoring
Andrew Miller from second base to extend the Maverick lead to four-runs.
The Chants threatened in the top of the seventh. A double and single to start the inning scored one run for Coastal Carolina. The Chanticleers would get runners at second and third but Moffat forced a ground out to end the threat and limit Coastal to just one run in the inning.
In the bottom of the eighth the Mavs picked up an insurance run. Williams singled to center field and advanced to third base off a stolen base and wild pitch.
JD Wadleigh hit a ground ball to second base as Williams took home, taking advantage of another Chanticleer error as the catcher dropped the throw at home plate.
Wong put the Chanticleers down in order in the ninth to secure the win 5-1 and the series victory for the Mavs.
