Mavericks Shine at Under Armour Invitational

ARLINGTON – The UT Arlington track and field team capped a terrific evening at their home meet, the Under Armour Invitational, on Thursday inside Maverick Stadium.

A slew of terrific performances led the way throughout the day, but two major standouts came at the hands of Shelby West and Tatyana Terrell

West had a career day in the hurdles, setting new personal bests in both the 100 and 400-meter hurdle events. West began the day with a victory in the 100-meter hurdles at 13.89 and followed that with an incredible run in the 400-meter hurdles at 59.06, good for 52nd in the nation.

Terrell also had a tremendous day beginning with her first run in the 100-meter dash in her career and blazing to a time of 11.50, good for second in the meet and Top 80 in the country. She followed that with another second place finish in the 200-meter dash, finishing at 23.40.

It was not enough to top Iyana Gray though, as she ran an 11.45 in the 100 and a 23.36 in the 200, picking up wins in both events. Gray and Terrell joined Adeyemi Talabi and Vanessa Ugorji with a strong showing in the 4x100 team as they placed first with a time of 44.79.

Joel Bengtsson continued his terrific season with a win in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13.72, while Lucas Van Klaveren cruised to a PR in the 400-meter hurdles at 51.57.

UTA went 1-2-3 in both the 100-meter hurdles and 110-meter hurdles as West, Krystal Igbo, and Jade Bontke led the way on the women's side, while Bengtsson, Nolan Walker, and Medric Roberson led the men's side.

A trio of freshmen hit PRs as Jackson Cichon rolled to an impressive second place finish in the 800-meter with a time of 1:51.60, while Jarvis Miles placed second in the 400-meter with a time of 47.40. Freshman Adam Herrera followed with a fourth place finish at 48.38.

The 4x100 team of Miles, Robert Griffin, Davontay Kennedy, and Bengtsson put together a season-best time at 40.29.

In distance, Madeleine Rowe earned a pair of second place finished in the 800-meter and the 5000-meter, while Tanner Henderson earned a third place finish in the 3000-meter steeplechase at 9:40.41.

In field events, Abigail Flores hit a PR in the hammer throw, breaking 50 meters and winning the event at 50.35. Calyha Brown won the shot put at 13.81, while Liv Cantby added a win in the javelin at 46.88.

UTA swept pole vault with Randon Gray winning the men's side with a PR of 5.00 and Abigail Kelly-Salo winning the women's side at 3.85. Jade Bontke picked up gold in the high jump at 1.72.

The Mavericks will take the week off and prepare for the Sun Belt Conference Championships on May, 12-14 at the Ragin' Cajun Track Facility in Lafayette, La.
