Tulsa Transfer Sterling Gaston-Chapman Commits To UTA

ARLINGTON – Another Division-I transfer has committed to new UT Arlington men's basketball head coach KT Turner's program as Tulsa product Sterling Gaston-Chapman has signed with the Mavericks.

Gaston-Chapman will be a junior with UTA in 2023-24 after spending his freshman and sophomore seasons with Tulsa. Last year with the Golden Hurricane, the 6-4 guard made 18 starts and played in all 30 games, averaging 3.9 points and 3 rebounds per contest.

"Sterling is a high-energy player who has the ability to play multiple positions with his size," said Turner. "He's a great defender and epitomizes the team-first mentality."

The Wichita, Kan., native scored a year-high 11 points in the regular-season finale at South Florida this past March. He also reached at least eight points on five other occasions during the 2022-23 campaign, and pulled down a season-most seven rebounds – five on the offensive end – at Oregon State to open the year.

Gaston-Chapman secured 5+ rebounds six times last year and recorded multiple steals in five contests, led by a three-theft effort versus UCF in an American Athletic Conference matchup.

As a freshman in 2021-22, the 218-pound Gaston-Chapman played in 17 games, averaging 1.5 points. He delivered a season-high seven points off the bench at UCF and also corralled a season-best four rebounds in that same game.

He also netted six points in just six minutes in a homecoming affair at Wichita State, and registered five points at SMU in only five minutes a few weeks later.

Gaston-Chapman graduated from Campus High School in 2021 as the school's all-time leading scorer and earned all-state and all-metro honors as a junior and senior; as a senior he averaged 19.1 points, 12.1 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.1 steals per game.

The 3-star recruit was named Class 6A Player of the Year as a junior after averaging 17.7 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.5 steals per contest. He was also selected as the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League (AVCTL) Division I Most Valuable Player as a junior.

This is Turner's eighth signee of his initial recruiting class as Gaston-Chapman joins D-I transfers Freds Pauls Bagatskis, DaJuan Gordon, Phillip Russell, Fabio Basili and Darrius Miles, former D-I product Dwayne Koroma and prep school graduate Makaih Williams. Incoming freshman Kade Douglas from nearby Lancaster High School was also signed last November.

Combined with returners Shemar Wilson, Brandyn Talbot and Aaron Cash, Turner now has 10 players on the 2023-24 roster who have previous D-I playing experience with still more signees coming. Those 10 have combined to score 3,196 D-I points; as a team last year, UTA began the season with only 1,215 D-I points combined among 14 players.
