ARLINGTON, Texas - Arkansas-Little Rock left fielder Adam Haefele ripped an RBI single just passed a diving Josh McSpadden to score a run in the top of the 13th innings as the visiting Trojans handed Texas-Arlington a 7-6 loss on the final day of the UTA Invitational.
UALR's (3-2) Chris Becker started the rally with a one out base hit and Leo Monterrey drew a walk setting up the game winning hit by Haefele.
UTA (3-4) thought they had the game won in the bottom of the 12th inning when McSpadden ripped a shot into the hole between first and second before Becker came flying across the field to make an outstanding grab to keep the game from ending.
Both teams provided a lot off offense early as the scored was tied 6-6 after the fifth inning before both pitching staffs silenced the offenses over the next seven innings.
UALR took a commanding lead in the second inning when they plated five runs, four unearned in the inning of starter Chris Reed. Joe Petrino plated the first run with a two-out single to right field. The second run came into score when UTA third baseman Daniel Macha allowed a ball to go through his legs. The Trojans took advantage of the extra at-bat as Becker doubled off the wall to clear the bases and chase Reed from the game.
UTA got a run back in their half of the second as Darrell Preston single up the middle and Ryan Nelson sacrificed him to second. Carey Avants plated the run with a single to right center field.
The Mavs put two more runs on the board in the third Hunter Pence delivered an RBI triple to right center field and later scored on a Nelson single to center.
UALR got a run back in the fourth when Haefele delivered a two-out single to left center field.
UTA was able to tie the game up in the fifth inning when Macha reached on an error and Pence followed with an infield single. Nelson plated both runners with a double to center field and later scored on a Preston double to center field.
Neither team was able to get any offense going until UTA mounted a rally in the ninth inning. After replacing Macha at third in the top half of the inning, Aaron Batlle started the ninth with a double to right center field. Pence was intentionally walked before Nelson struck out swinging, Preston went down looking and Dane Ryan flew out to center to kill the rally.
Travis Trammell (1-0) came in to get all three outs in the ninth and earned the victory after going five innings allowing two hits and fanning five. Derek Brehm (1-1) took the loss by allowing one run on two hits. Mike Snapp struck out both batters he faced in his 98th career appearance, establishing a new Southland Conference mark for career appearances.
Preston led the offense with three hits, while Baker, Pence and Nelson each collected two. Nelson also knocked in three runs. Becker and Haefele each collected four hits and combined for five runs batted in.
The Mavericks return to action on Thursday afternoon, Feb. 26, as they open up a three-game set with Dallas Baptist. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark.
